Interesting Pets

Model View PheonixFor those of you who like pets, there are over 80 non-combat pets in World of Warcraft. There are also a few combat effects that act like pets. Some are easy to get while others are incredibly difficult to find. Taking some time out to hunt down one of these can be a welcome distraction from the grind of leveling or gearing up. And you get a little friend.

Pets come from from a variety of sources including vendors, drops, quests, crafting, and special promotional awards.

By far the most difficult pets to get, often impossible, are the promotional award pets. These are available by going to conventions, buying special editions of the game, or getting lucky and finding a reward card in the trading card game. You are typically given a game code which you can turn in to get your pet.

Let’s take a look at some of the fun, interesting, but still obtainable pets.

Pheonix Hatchling

This pet is a rare drop from the last boss in the 5 player Magister’s Terrace instance. We don’t know much about it yet, but it is one of the best looking pets in the game.

Mojo

Mojo is a pet you can get in Zul’aman by using Amani Hex Sticks on the various frogs inside the instance. Typically you free someone from their froggy curse, but sometimes if you are lucky you will get this frisky little frog. Once you bring your pet out, if anyone /kiss mojo it will polymorph them into a frog and whisper a ’scandalously’ inappropriate phrase. For extra fun, you can mount up as a frog or druids can even shift to flight form and fly around as a frog. This is definitely one of the more fun pets.

Prairie Chicken, Cluck!

You get this little clucker from a hidden quests in the game, Cluck! It requires you to go out to Saldean’s Farm in Westfall and cluck like a chicken. If you type /chicken enough times at a farm chicken it will eventually give you a quest and an egg after you feed it. It’s one of those things entire guilds can do for an evening of fun. Watching all your friends run around and cluck like chickens is priceless. If you are Horde you can still do this quest but you will need an Alliance friend to trigger the chicken to give you the quest while you sit back and watch them cluck.

Mr. Pinchy and his Magical Crawdad

Mr. Pinchy like a genie in the bottle that will give you three wishes, if you can catch him. And if you are lucky, he might give you a Magical Crawdad Box. Mr. Pinchy is a hard to find, each cast is it has about a 0.2% chance. That’s one in 500. But every now and then if you are fishing in the Outland Highland Mixed Schools for crawdads you might find this genie and he might give you three wishes. One of them might be a magical crawdad. Who knows what makes Mr. Pinchy happy or furious? If you know, please comment.

Tiny Spore Bat

Model View SporebatThis pet follows the logic that anything small is also cute. It’s a great looking pet that you can buy for easily obtainable glowcaps. However you need exhalted reputation with Sporegar. If you are an alchemist you will may already have it or working on it for the two receipes, Recipe: Transmute Primal Earth to Water and Recipe: Shrouding Potion. However, gathering the reputation can be time consuming unless you are an herbalist and can stealth. By stealthing through Coilfang instances like Underbog and collecting Sanguine Hibiscus you can get exhalted in about ten hours and make around 500 gold or more selling any extra herbs you find.

Worg Pup

Deep in Blackrock Spire is a den of ferocious puppies. If you help catch a few in a cage, you’ll get one as a reward. We aren’t really sure if you get one or two, because when you summon it, sometimes it’s black and sometimes it’s brown. At level 70 Blackrock Spire can be soloed by almost any character. If you have any trouble, bring a friend who wants the puppy or if you have stealth or invisibility potions you can skip past it all go straight to where the puppies are. If you are starting to collect pets or like spiders, there is a quest for a Smolderweb Hatchling which can be completed at the same time.

‘Combat Pets’

There are a number of ways to get ‘combat pets’ if you are not a hunter. Generally these are item effects and last a limited time. For example some jewelcrafter figurines summon pets for a short time. They generally usable by anyone and last 20 seconds. They are easy to get on the Auction House or from a friendly jewelcrafter. They have names like Khorium Boar, Truesilver Crab, and Felsteel Boar. There are also a number of items available in the game which also some a combat pet like the Ancient Cornerstone Grimoire, Barov Peasant Caller, Commander’s and Overseer’s Badge, Defender of the Timbermaw, Shard of Azzinoth, and Tiny Voodoo Mask.
