Grouping for the Best

Screenshot of Default Raid UI group 2.When you raid the group number you are in becomes important. Many of the buffs that you get from other players only work within your group number. If you are the raid leader or assistant picking and choosing which players are in which groups, it often makes the difference between success and failure.

As a player it’s helpful to know which buffs are best for you and as a raid leader it’s helpful to understand all the classes so you can decide how to organize the grouping. Let’s take a look at the player group only buffs. These are buffs that only work on your own group. This doesn’t include buffs you can cast across groups and ones that work individually. For example, a priest can cast Prayer of Fortitude which will buff the target and the target’s party. So they can cast it on the entire raid. But Vampiric Touch only gives mana to members in their own own group.

Let’s take a look at the player group only enhancements.

Class Spec Buff Description
Druid Balance Moonkin Aura +5% spell crit
Druid Feral Leader of the Pack and Improved +5% melee crits, +4% health on melee or range crits
Druid Restoration Tree of Life Aura 25% spirit in +healing
Paladin Protection Devotion Aura and Improved +1205 armor
Paladin Retribution Sanctity Aura and Improved +2% damage physical and holy
Priest Shadow Vampiric Embrace 15% of your shadow damage +hp
Priest Shadow Vampiric Touch 5% of your shadow damage +mana
Shaman Enhancement Grace of Air Totem and Enhancing Totems +92 agility
Shaman Enhancement Unleashed Rage +10% AP when shaman melee crits for 10secs
Shaman Enhancement Windfury Totem and Improved Weapon Totems 20% chance melee hits add AP
Shaman Enhancement Wrath of Air +101 magic damage and healing
Hunter Beastmaster Ferocious Inspiration +3% damage for 10sec when pet crits
Hunter Marksman Trueshot Aura +125 ap, 45 yards
Warlock Demonology Blood Pact and Improved Imp +86 stamina
Warrior Fury Battle Shout and Commanding Presence +366 ap
Warrior Fury Commanding Shout and Commanding Presence +1350 health

Note that the descriptions are listed with max benefit from talents. Some buffs don’t require the full spec listed if you don’t want max benefit. Obviously optimizing the best groupings is dependent on which classes are in your raid. But here are some guidelines.

  • A Tree Druid goes with the tanks, or whoever is taking the most damage.
  • Moonkin Druids are best with casters.
  • Feral Druids go well with melee dps or groups with pets.
  • Beastmaster Hunters help dps groups.
  • Retribution Paladins generally need an Enhancement Shaman in their group to do the best dps.
  • Retribution Paladins with Sanctity Aura help Paladin tanks with threat enormously
  • Shadow Priests restore mana for whoever is running out. Usually the healers need it most.
  • Enhancement Shamans can help melee dps or help regenerate mana, depending on what is more important.
  • Demonology Warlocks help tanks or whoever is dying from low health or help hunter pets stay alive.
  • Fury Warriors help melee dps.

There is no easy answer to the best group make up. It strongly depends not only on the strength of your players but also on the encounter and who needs more mana, health, or damage to win the fight. Also keep in mind that you can move players between groups at any time. So you can always have someone in one group for the first part of an fight and then swap them later. Often the different phases of a boss fight have different requirements. This makes it even more complicated to get the best groupings. However if you stick to these basic rules, you will do well.

Keep grouping for the best!

[...] But in after doing that, I am pretty sure making an automated tool would be quite complicated. http://flux.io/2008/02/15/grouping-for-the-best/ In my opinion, the biggest difficulty would be how to compare buffs that helped mana or [...]

Marksmen hunters also have Trueshot Aura which is a group or party only too.

Thanks Squiggy, I added it. Note that on some boss fights it’s of limited bosses since the party can be spread out further than the range. But it is useful on most of them.

I think Improved Sanctity Aura from Palis is missing.. 2% increased damage

Thanks Borsch, I added it and a note to group them with paladin tanks.

Nice list but you forgot a important warrior group buff, the commanding shout. Its +1080 max health untalented for the group, and 1350 with 5/5 in commanding presence. If 1 warrior is in the tank group then this should be used, with 2 then both commanding and battle shout can be used. The battle shout will increase the tanks threat and thus help the whole raid. And it does not have to be a fury warrior buffing the melee group with battle shout, most arms warriors will have the shouts talented too. And if you lack both arms and fury warrior then even a prot warrior can boost the melee group with with an untalented shout with 305 AP

Redface, thanks for that. I updated the warrior buffs to include it. It’s especially useful because you can keep it up constantly.
