Flame Retardant
If you have been collecting heroic badges and shopping at G’eras for epic gear, you may have noticed the Inferno items and asked yourself. Do I really need that much fire resistance? Ever?
Unless you are a tank, warlock, or melee damage then the answer is no. Otherwise, the answer is yes. Eventually.
There are three Burning Crusades boss fights that require fire resistance. Leothras the Blind in Serpentshrine Caverns, Azgalor in Mount Hyjal and Illidan in the Black Temple.
Leothras the Blind has a human and a demon form. The demon must be tanked by someone with at least 295 Fire Resistance unbuffed. Usually a warlock does this because of their resist talents and the demon does not hit too hard in melee. But any tank in resist gear can do this as well.
Azgalor in Mount Hyjal does a 40 yard Rain of Fire which can kill most melee and tanks without at least 200 Fire Resistance.
Illidan’s Flames of Azzinoth among his other abilities will require your off tanks to have at least 360 Fire Resistance.
| Item | Slot | +Fire |
|---|---|---|
| Pheonix-fire Brand | finger | 30 |
| Amulet of the Torn-heart | neck | 24 |
| Flame Armor Kit | kit | 32 (+8×4) |
| Enchant Cloak - Fire Resistance | enchant | 15 |
| Glyph of Fire Warding | glyph | 20 |
| Inferno Chest | chest | 60 |
| Inferno Legs | legs | 55 |
| Inferno Gloves | hands | 40 |
| Inferno Boots | feet | 45 |
| Flask of Chromatic Wonder | - | 35 |
| Pendant of Frozen Flame | neck | 30 |
| Wyrmcultist’s Cloak | back | 24 |
How do you get this much fire resistance? If you have been following the quest progression to reach these bosses you should have a couple items that will help. The Pheonix-fire Brand from killing Magtheridon and the Amulet of the Torn-heart from the Cipher of Damnation. Which will get you started with +54. To obtain the rest your will need to either get a full or partial set of Inferno gear. Or some inexpensive greens from the Auction House and blues from crafting. For all of these items you can use a variety of augments to increase their resistance. In the table we have listed some of the more common ones.
The Inferno Forged, Tempered, and Hardened gear is by far the best for fire resistance. A full set of gear will give you +200 Fire Resistance but costs 100 Badges of Justice. Here’s an example for the plate set chest, legs, hands, and feet. But it also comes in mail, leather and cloth.
Many characters don’t have the 100 badges that it takes to buy a full Inferno set. You can also craft your own items, crafted fire blues, with names like Blastguard, Flamebane, Flameheart, and Flamescale sets. They are all item level 112-115.
If you don’t have the needed crafting profession or you are short on materials you can also use green items found on the Auction House. Randomly dropped greens with fire resistance are commonly resold on the AH, just search for the name “Fire Resistance”.
Keep in mind that you likely don’t need a full Inferno set, except for perhaps the Illidan fight. So it is less expensive to use a mix of Inferno purples, crafted blues, or Auction House greens.
Another way you can supplement or even replace the need for fire resistance gear on fights like Azgalor is to use Major Fire Protection Potions. You can stock up on these ahead of time or use the Cauldron of Major Fire Protection to make them for the entire raid.
If you are tanking or in the line of fire, get your suit on. And remember that you resistance will cap at 365, so anything above that for current end game bosses is not useful.
we have never used fr gear on azgalor… caster could equip some shadowresi to resist the silence.. but I think doing more dps in damage gear is more important. just run out of the fire rain and pop a fire resi pot or two during the fight.
Thanks, using fire resist potions to supplement or replace the fire gear is an excellent idea, I’ll add that in. I wonder how many groups have tried using the Cauldron of Major Fire Protection?

Both plate and leather crafters can make sets of fire resist gear, some of those pieces make a lot more sense than blindly buying all four of the epic items - an example is Blastguard Belt.
Certainly if you get as far as Illidan, your tank will need 365 buffed fire resistance PLUS as much threat as possible so it’s bets to juggle resistance with this in mind and sacrifice as few of your regular tanking items as possible.
Thanks, I made the crafted blue link more prominent and named the sets.
silence? Over fifteen years had passed since he had left his last calling card, I aciphex 20mg through it. He produced a clay cup from his bag, fiHed it with water and brought it
Good website, I genuinely discovered it to be great. I’m looking forward to coming back once again to find what’s current.
Some nice information up here, thanks man. You know Cataclysm is driving me nuts, at one point it was going to be released in Feb 2010, currently it is supposedly Nov 2010!
