Which Item To Upgrade First

Slot Value
Head, Chest, Legs, 2H Weapon 1
Shoulder, Hands, Waist, Feet 0.777
Trinket 0.7
Wrist, Neck, Back, Finger, Off-hand/Shield 0.55
1H Weapon 0.42
Ranged 0.3

Often there is a choice of which item to upgrade first. For example, do you get the most out of updating your head slot item or your shoulder item? At first, this will be fairly easy to answer. You just upgrade the one that is the worst quality. For example, get rid of your greens for blues and then purples. And secondly upgrade your item level.

We have talked about gearing up, quality and item levels previously.

But as all your items start to become the same quality and roughly the same level this becomes harder to decide. A third way to help you decide is to know how Blizzard spends points on itemization.

Because of the way Blizzard factors itemization points; items that go in the Head, Chest, Leg, and 2H Weapon slots are always more valuable than the others. This means they will have more total bonuses. So by getting these items first, you gain more faster. You have probably noticed this already by recognizing that your trinkets and rings seemed to have much less than your armor pieces. But of particular note, is that 1H weapons and ranged weapons offer the least amount of an upgrade, even less than a ring. I have seen many high level characters give their one handed more priority than the rest, and instinctively this makes sense, but it’s not your best investment if all other things are equal.

Of course, this is just a guide. There are exceptions, for example you may need more burst damage from your weapon or bigger heals. If there is something specific your character needs get it first but keep in mind which item slots you are spending your effort on first.
