Must Have - Medallion of the Alliance

Some items in the game are remarkable in that they are either insanely useful or very powerful. Let’s take a look at one.

Screenshoot of Biggins

Medallion of the Alliance / Horde

Profile: Stop being crowd controlled, it’s not just for PvP.
Where: honor reward
How: Get ready to run some battlegrounds
Loot: Medallion and it’s younger brother Insignia

Both this trinket and it’s younger brother the Insignia of the Alliance / Horde have undergone a few changes over their lifetime. There is a version for each class in the game that used to do different things, but since patch 2.1.3 they all have the same effect. The remove slow and crowd control effects cast on your by other players and often by creatures. This turns out to be insanely useful in PvP and surprisingly useful in many creature encounters as well.

Those who have been doing PvP since before The Burning Crusades usually picked up the Insignia and even continued to use it in the expansion after they hit level 70. But for some reason, and I did this too, a lot of us glanced at the Medallion and thought, meh it’s not much of an upgrade. We saw the 50 resilience and the, if we didn’t miss it, the reduced cooldown. It seemed to cost too many honor points so we happily went off and spent the points elsewhere.

The Medallion has a TWO minute cooldown and the Insignia has a FIVE minute cooldown. This is the difference between night and day in PvP and even in PvE boss fights. For anyone who does PvP especially in the arena, this Medallion is an absolute must upgrade. But what many people don’t realize is that both trinkets are also very useful in non-PvP encounters.

Many creatures and bosses in the game cast either a slow or crowd control effect on your character. The fights where they do, this trinket is amazingly useful. And it’s well worth carrying it around in your inventory and equip it just beforehand. Let’s take a look at a couple that it’s handy to have for. This isn’t even close to a full list, but it should give you an idea.

  • Harbinger Skyriss in Arcatraz - He single target fears someone. If that happens to be your healer at a bad time, the party can wipe.
  • Shade of Aran in Karazhan - during this fight Aran does a magnetic pull and a slow effect where everyone has to run to the walls. For classes that can’t break this effect any other way, the trinket is very handy.
  • Big Bad Wolf in Karazhan - aoe fear that slows down valuable dps during the fight
  • Fel Overseer’s in Shadow Labs - These demons can be a problem unless you your group is very well geared. Occasionally they fear even the tank causing the group to wipe.
  • Coilfang Rays and Champions - Scattered throughout coilfang instances these creatures individually fear and AoE Intimidating Shout. The rays often cause someone to pull another mob causing a wipe.
  • Hunter NPC’s - scattered throughout many instances, the trinket is great for when they scatter shot
  • Talon King Ikiss in Sethekk Halls - The bird king sheeps you, trinket for the win.
  • Musel’ek’s Freeze Trap in Slave Pens - haven’t tried this, should work
  • Black Stalker’s Levitate in Slave Pens - haven’t tried this, might work
  • Thespia’s Enveloping Winds in SteamVaults - haven’t tried this, might work

It’s an amazing trinket and well worth the honor points.

Also Archimonde the last boss in Mount Hyjal has two abilities called Doomfire and Fear. The first creates paths of fire which kill you if you walk into them, and then of course he fears you into them. This trinket is very handy to break the fear and avoid running into the fire.
