Marking with Hotkeys

Screenshot of Raid Symbol Selection

Usually when going through an instance someone gets the lucky job of marking the creature mobs for kill order and cc. It is a critical job but it is repetitive and surprisingly difficult with the default UI. You have to select each creature one at a time, right click on their portrait, and then mouse through two menus to select a symbol for it. This is tolerable most of the time but it becomes a real problem for mobs that spawn in quickly before you can mark. For example, the hallway in Mechanar leading up to Pathaleon the Calculator spawns in six mobs one after another giving you very little time to mark anything. Often confusion takes over, sheeps break, tanks run around like headless chickens, and the party wipes.

While you don’t always have time to mark them all, you do have time to mark one or two critical ones, if you use hotkeys or a mod. Mods are better for the mouse inclined and the hotkeys for keyboarders. Let’s take a look at how to setup the hotkeys.

All the raid symbols can be bound to a single key press, so all you need to do is select the creature and push a key to mark them. Fast and easy, and better than clicking through menus.

To setup your hotkeys:

  • in the game, select Options
  • click the Key Bindings button
  • scroll down to Raid Targeting
  • assign one button for each symbol, I usually use the numbers on the Num Pad to the right of my keyboard

That’s it! All you have to do now is select a target and press one of the assigned keys.

For those of you with a key assignable keyboard, like the Logitech G15, you can reassign these to more convenient keys like the G keys on the left which are closer to the WASD keys.

To setup your G keys:

  • press MR to start recording
  • press the G key to assign it to, for example G1
  • press the Num Pad key for the raid symbol you want to assign to the G key, for example Numpad 8
  • press MR again to stop recording

Good luck taking down the mob.

Awesome, I’m going to try this out sometime… I have a G15 keyboard but haven’t assigned the G keys yet! Thanks!
